Everything about the system depends on that settling time — which is exactly what a sudden rush of water takes away.
Why the school-year routine is harder on the tank
It isn't that a family uses dramatically more water in September than in July. It's that the use gets concentrated. Four showers between 6:30 and 7:30, then a dishwasher and two loads of laundry in the same evening. Push that much water through the tank in a short window and it stirs up the settled layers, sending solids out to the drain field instead of leaving them behind where they belong. Solids in the field are what clogs it — and a clogged field is the expensive repair, not the tank.
Small habits that spread the load
- Spread laundry across the week instead of doing it all on Saturday — two loads a day beats eight in an afternoon
- Stagger morning showers where you can, even by ten minutes
- Run the dishwasher and washing machine at different times of day, not back to back
- Fix running toilets and dripping faucets — a running toilet can quietly add hundreds of gallons a day to the tank
- Put in a lint filter on the washer discharge; lint is one of the things that ends up in a field and doesn't break down
When the household changes, the schedule should too
Pumping frequency depends on tank size and how many people are using it. A household that has grown — kids home from college, a parent moved in, a rental unit now occupied — is filling the tank faster than the old schedule assumed. If your routine has changed since the last pump, it's worth moving the next one up rather than counting on the same three-year interval.
